What Is AI Consulting and Does Your Business Need It?

AI Strategy

There is a lot of noise around AI right now. Every software vendor claims to have it built in. Every conference has it on the agenda. And every business leader is being asked — by their board, their team or their competitors — what their AI strategy is.

The problem is that noise does not equal clarity. Most organisations know they should be doing something with AI. Very few know what that something should actually be — and fewer still know how to get from ambition to something that works safely and creates real value.

That is where AI consulting comes in.

What AI consulting actually is

AI consulting is the work of helping organisations make good decisions about artificial intelligence — what to use it for, how to implement it responsibly, how to measure whether it is working, and how to manage the risks that come with it.

A good AI consultant is not primarily a technologist. They are a translator — someone who can bridge the gap between business problems and technical solutions, and make sure the two are actually aligned before any significant investment is made.

At Vantivio, we describe what we do as AI solution enablement. It starts with the business problem, not the technology.

What AI consulting is not

It is not someone coming in to sell you a platform. It is not a vendor recommending their own tools. And it is not a generic AI strategy document that sits in a drawer and changes nothing.

Good AI consulting results in a clear picture of where AI can genuinely help your organisation, a prioritised plan for getting there, and a realistic assessment of the investment, governance and capability required to make it happen safely.

Signs your business could benefit

  • Your team is spending significant time on manual, repetitive tasks that feel like they should be automatable
  • You have data you are not using effectively to make decisions
  • You have heard AI pitches but cannot work out which ones are relevant to your situation
  • You tried an AI tool and it did not deliver what you hoped
  • Your board or leadership team is asking about AI strategy and you do not have a clear answer
  • A competitor appears to be doing something with AI that is giving them an advantage

What to expect from an AI engagement

A well-run AI consulting engagement typically starts with discovery — understanding your business model, your processes, your data, and where the genuine pain points are. Not what you think AI could fix, but what is actually getting in the way of performance.

From there, a good consultant will help you identify two or three high-value opportunities where AI can make a measurable difference — and build a business case for each that you can take to your leadership team or board with confidence.

The best engagements end with a clear, costed, governed plan — and ideally a pilot that delivers early results and builds internal confidence before a larger investment is committed.

How to evaluate an AI consultant

  • Do they start with your problem or their solution? Be cautious of anyone who leads with a specific tool or platform before understanding your situation.
  • Can they explain things clearly? If they cannot explain AI concepts in plain language, they will struggle to communicate them to your team.
  • Do they talk about governance and risk? Any credible AI consultant should raise data protection, ethics and risk management without being prompted.
  • What does their delivery track record look like? Strategy without delivery experience is just advice.

The Vantivio approach

We work with organisations at every stage — from the first conversation about what AI might mean for their business, through to building and deploying solutions that change how they operate. We do not push platforms or products. We start with your outcomes and work backwards to the right solution.

Our AI Opportunity Scan is a structured, two-week engagement that gives you a clear view of where AI can create value in your business — with a prioritised list of use cases and a practical next step for each.

You should not need a computer science degree to make good decisions about AI. You need someone who can translate ambition into action.

If you are unsure where to start, get in touch. The right starting point is usually a conversation, not a commitment.
